Little Known Fact
Yesterday I got to know of something which I was perplexed about for a long time. Ever wondered why in NUS there are some lecturers called Prof and some called Dr? Well... there are actually two choices for anyone joining academia. You can either choose a research track, i.e. become profs, or a teaching track, i.e. become doctors.

The stages are:

Well its obviously more difficult to get in the research track. But this doesn't mean you should have less esteem for those in the teaching track!

Update: This post is related to NUS only! Other universities might have another system which I dunno.

.....

Comments:
I thought all new lecturers/researchers are doctors? By default every academic staff is a PhD holder, so they're called doctors. They are promoted, i.e. granted tenure and given the title of Assoc Prof/ Prof only after they've proved themselves (after publishing some outstanding research) or stayed long enough.

I don't think if you're in research all the way you can never become a professor.

Aiya of coz all PhD holders are doctors lah. But the doctors I meant is in the academic sense. Come tok to me. I can give u examples of people in NUS who have been researching long enough but still not a professor.
