就这么说过去只是闹剧一场
Searched for the lyrics of this song after I read an article in today's Straits Times about how this song accompanied the writer after a failed relationship. The lyrics are by Kwan, sung by Faye Wong.

Take Care...
The phrase take care is probably the most overrated phrase we use. Do we really mean it when we say it or is it just a filler... something which the sayer feels good about saying and the receiver feels good about receiving it but ultimately has no such purpose or intention. When we tell someone to take care, will they take more care than if we didnt say it? Who benefits more from this phrase? I would think the sayer benefits more becoz by mere utterance of it, she will feel that she has done someting good even though there is no direct causation to the better benefit of the receiver.

Birthday Wish
Seems like people are posting their birthday wishes online and getting them fulfiled. As usual here I am jumping onto the bandwagon. Being a simple person, of coz my wish will be a simple one too. Yes, I have only one wish, not two not three but only one.

Tada...

Challenge Stradale

The Ferrari Challenge Stradale. It's not the top of the line Ferrari and I will pay for the COE myself.

So anyone out there going to fulfil my wish?

A Bedtime Story for Her
Once upon a time in a kingdom far far away, there lived a commoner and a princess. Of course there were other people as well lah, but those two are our protagonists. The commoner was a smart boy, though sometimes he could be quite lazy. He was also very idealistic, often dreaming of castles in the sky. He told himself one day he will be up there in the castle with the beautiful princess herself.

The princess, in contrast, was a pragmatic damsel (not in distress though), who worked hard to improve herself and to help people who are less fortunate. She also has tonnes and tonnes of princes from all over the universe, coming to ask for her hand. The princess, being an assertive character, did not accept them all unless she somehow believes that he is the one and only one for her. So obviously she wouldn't choose the commoner lor.

The commoner did not know this at first and tried ways and means of getting nearer to the princess to win her heart. Little did he know that the princess would not choose him no matter what he did. Time passed and he was still single-minded in his belief that the princess was the one for him. Many of his fellow commoners laughed at him and ask him to find someone of his own kind. He often nodded but deep inside his heart, he knew only the princess is the one for him.

Finally, one fine spring day, the commoner finally professed his feelings to the princess. The princess opened her mouth wide in surprise for several minutes. When at last she regained her composure, she blurted "But you... you have a... babyface!". Now it is the commoner's turn to open her mouth in surprise. But he didn't say anything in reply. He knew that it was the truth. He couldn't be what the princess wanted her prince to be. Dejected, the commoner left despite the princess' plea to be just friends with him. He knew that being friends would hurt him more and chose to leave instead.

Years passed but still both of them were alone though they did have many of their own friends. One day, he chanced upon a kingdom in his journey around the universe. He didn't realize that this was his beloved hometown, because there was so much changes done by the princess. Lo and behold, as fate would have it he bumped into the princess (not literally of course) and they began talking to each other again. The princess noticed this one day and decided hey... I shouldnt lead him on anymore and then arranged to meet him outside the cinema exit at a square marina.

The day arrived. The princess quickly asked the commoner not to say anything first. She then leaned towards him and whispered "... ... ...".

Cannes it be any Weirder
Cannes results are out and against all odds, the Dardenne brothers have won the Palme d'Or again with their The Child. Critics were very divided on who the jury would eventually choose but I am sure no one had their bets high on this one. Second prize goes to Broken Flowers by Jim Jarmusch starring the ever funny Bill Murray. That's all the excitement there is for now. Now the waiting for which of the Cannes entries I would be able to see soon. First up would probably be Sin City, coming soon.

Diversify
It is really an eye-opening experience when you go to work. You get to meet people who would go 'Wah...' when you say you are an university student. You get to meet cheeky and flirtatious aunties. You get to meet very young colleagues who really don't look their age. In short, you get to meet a diverse group of people all doing their job, like a cog in a grand wheel of life. I am glad I am part of that wheel now, getting to know the rest of the cogs.

p.s. It is also a very nice feeling to receive a sms from someone unexpected. It just makes ur tiring day just tat bit more tolerable. =)

Cannes Part Deux
As of this moment, the current top contender for the Palme d'Or is Michael Haneke's Caché with its stunning final shot which will leave u with a sore scalp. Cronenberg's A History of Violence is looking good too with good acting by Aragorn himself. Finally, can't wait for HHH next wk!

Updated: HHH is this week, not the next.

Cannes Updates

For those who wanna follow Cannes news here are two blogs from NYTimes and BBC. Apparently the new Eric Khoo film is gathering good reviews as well as Woody Allen's Match Point. Kim Ki Duk's Bow is a stinker though. Gus van Sant's Last Days reminds me of his Elephant, though not sure if an understanding of Nirvana and American pop culture is needed to appreciate it.

IT'S HERE!!!
My goodness... this is the second time! This is the second time I felt earthquake tremors in PGP. First time was several months ago and the second time was at 1pm+ ago. Can really feel the vibrations. Feels like you are being swayed around. Because I had the experience alreadi, just now I immediately went to news sites to check whether an earthquake did occur. But no reports. But a moment ago 3pm+ there was indeed a news report about a big quake occuring in Sumatra around noon. Now I can really tell u that unless u r sleeping like a log, you can indeed feel tremors in Singapore.

Guilty Pleasure

It's really not often that I am enamoured by a trailer of the typical Hollywood romantic comedy. But alas, I seem to have fallen into the trap which is A Lot Like Love (the female lead, Amanda Peet looks surprisingly like Natalie Portman and Demi Moore combined). Anyway, most of the time I would just turn up my arty-farty nose at this kinda shows but hmmm... I think I just might make an exception this time round. Checking the reviews online unearthed relatively good reviews here and here (registration required) and a ghastly bad review here.

The best way to judge it is to catch it when it opens in June. But erm... how would I know whether it is a lot like love or not?

F*** 1
For those following F1, this season is turning out to be a nightmare for Ferrari, the reigning champions. Michael Schumacher, especially, is experiencing one of his worst seasons ever, with either the car letting him down or him making unwarranted mistakes...

WTF?! Why is this happening?? They were so dominant last year! How come this year suddenly everyone's car is better. Ok maybe only McLaren and Renault. A simple answer would be its Bridgestone's fault. They always like this one. Always fail to match or surpass Michelin in the early stages of the season. Eventually they might be better than Michelin, but when is it, is anybody's guess. And Barri oso... even when Schumi make mistakes he oso cannot salvage the situation and help Ferrari get some points. Sigh...

Doesn't help that next race is Monaco, which is not known to be a Ferrari/Schumi dominant track. I am sure Schumi is still at the top of his game. Just look at how he jumped from dunno what place to 3rd place in a pitstop in Imola. He even set a fast lap after his pitstop, with his car fully fueled and lapping almost 2s faster than anyone else! Don't disappoint me anymore Ferrari!

Little Known Fact
Yesterday I got to know of something which I was perplexed about for a long time. Ever wondered why in NUS there are some lecturers called Prof and some called Dr? Well... there are actually two choices for anyone joining academia. You can either choose a research track, i.e. become profs, or a teaching track, i.e. become doctors.

The stages are:

Well its obviously more difficult to get in the research track. But this doesn't mean you should have less esteem for those in the teaching track!

Update: This post is related to NUS only! Other universities might have another system which I dunno.

我們天空 何時才能成一片?

I've heard Faye Wong's 天空 (Sky) since I was quite young, my early secondary school days. But it was only until a while ago that I really bothered to understand what the lyrics really meant. As with a lot of Faye's songs, it is simple yet meaningful. The mood of it isn't sad but rather of disappointment. The lyrics are by 林夕 (Lin Xi):

Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.
Recently in Singapore there was a kinda big issue about whether casinos Integrated Resorts should be built. As usual the government exercised their power and decided for us that yes, they should be built. But this post isnt about that, since the decision has already been made. This post is about the moral repercussions that the public (as well as the govt) are worried of and are planning to eliminate.

Well, I am proud to announce that the moral police has been dispatched around the island and at places that used to be safe for fellow law-breakers.

Over the past weeks I've been taking bus 10 quite frequently. There were two times when suddenly the bus stopped at the bus stop. No, the bus wasn't picking up or letting passengers alight. Something more unusual happened. The bus driver got out of his seat and walked towards the passengers. Turned out that a passenger (male teenagers at both times) has underpaid the fare! I would like to argue the reason why teenagers are doing this but I shall leave that for another day (note: coz the fares are bloody expensive lah!). Anyway this trick is farely common (pun intended). You just have to pay the minimum fare using coins (80 cents) and then take a ride which normally would have cost more than $1. So the driver proceeded to embarrass them by confronting them while the rest of us were staring at the free entertainment which ensued (no, i don't mean TV mobile). I was surprised that the driver remembered who the culprit in question was. Wah... being a bus driver not easy seah. Yes, this is the first instance of the moral police at work.

The second incident occurred at GV Plaza. Was catching a NC16 movie. First sign that something was out of place was when the ticket auntie asked for my IC. WTF?!?! It's just a NC16 show! I've never been checked for a NC16 show. M18 maybe, R21 quite often. But NC16?? I wasn't even wearing a cute t-shirt. Ok maybe this was an one-off incident. So I happily rushed to the entrance of the cinema becoz I was kinda late. And guess who greeted me at the entrance? Not one, not two but a team of ushers all standing side by side to block the entrance and to check my IC. Whoa... security is even tighter than Changi Airport seah! They are scared that a NC16 show would corrupt my young innocent mind. I am so touched that they care so much about our morality. Kudos!

So yeah these were my experiences. Anyone has similar experiences? Please comment. I promise I won't reveal your identity to the moral police.

p.s. The author would like to emphasize that he was not embarassed by a bus driver. Really!
